Mangalore, Apr 1: Although election heat is catching up in the state, none of the political parties have shown interest in highlighting the sufferings of endosulfan victims in their campaigns. Endosulfan victims and those fighting for their rights will not vote for parties who do not include steps to help endosulfan victims in their manifestos, said Shridhar Gowda K, President, Endo Virodhi Horata Samithi, Kokkada.

Addressing media persons at a news conference in Mangalore, Mr. Gowda said that relief for endosulfan victims is treated as a major issue by political parties and politicians in Kerala but their Karnataka counterparts have so far showed minimal interest in this regard.

“Perhaps endosulfan victims get neglected because they are not a 'vote bank' for political parties. The state Assembly elections scheduled to be held soon, we demand that political parties include in their respective manifestos steps they will take to provide relief for endosulfan victims and find a permanent solution to the problem. We will not reveal as to which party we will support but we will certainly oppose those parties which leave out the issue of endosulfan from their manifestos”, Mr. Gowda said.

Alleging the district administration of remaining impassive in terms of addressing the issue of endosulfan victims, Mr. Gowda said that even though an appeal was made to the authorities to reveal the endosulfan victim survey and the list of endosulfan victims identified from medical camps, no attempt has been made in this regard.

The Department of Health is not serious about the issue either, Mr. Gowda said. “They have held medical camps and declared that there are just 1,907 endosulfan victims. They have neither explained the reasons for leaving out other endosulfan victims nor clarified as to what parameters they have used to classify victims of endosulfan. Even though eight months have passed by since the Department of Health submitted a report to the State Legal Services Authority regarding provision of smart card, ambulance, mobile clinics and other facilities for endosulfan victims, no progress has taken place in this front. The state government has approved 3.5 acres of land and Rs. 3 crore for Kokkada Government Hospital, the Revenue Department has still not sanctioned the land for the purpose”, Mr. Gowda groused.

The Samithi will keep fighting for the rights of endosulfan victims and already many people and organizations including Kemaru Mutt Swamiji, Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) have expressed support for the cause, Mr. Gowda said. In case parties fail to address endosulfan issue in elections, a protest will be held with endosulfan victims in attendance in front of the Vidhana Soudha after the new government is formed, Mr. Gowda informed.

Ramesh K, State Secretary, ABVP, and Muhammad Muhsin, President, JIH Youth Wing, DK, were present.

Udupi: A 40-year-old NRI from Udupi has reportedly lost more than Rs 12.25 lakh in an online investment scam operated through Telegram.

According to a complaint filed at the CEN police station, Leo Jerome Mendonsa, who has been working in Dubai for the past 15 years in computer accessories sales, maintains NRI accounts in Karkala and Nitte.

On November 12, 2025, Mendonsa was added to a Telegram group called Instaflow Earnings by unknown individuals. Users identified as Priya and Dipannita persuaded him to invest in “Revenue Tasks.” Initially, Mendonsa transferred Rs 1,100 multiple times and received the promised returns, encouraging him to continue.

On November 14, another user, Nishmitha Shetty, directed him to register on a website, digitvisionuoce.cc, and invest Rs 4 lakh in various shares. Over the next few days, he made multiple transfers totaling Rs 12,25,000, including Rs 50,000 via Google Pay, believing the scheme was legitimate.

After receiving the money, the alleged handlers stopped responding, and neither the invested amount nor the promised profits were returned.

The CEN police have registered a case under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the IT Act and Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and investigations are ongoing.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
