Parameshwara defends Cong fielding 'tainted' leaders

Parameshwara
Bangalore, Apr 9: People who made allegations that the Congress tickets for Assembly elections have been sold will be asked to appear before their disciplinary committee, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC)?President G Parameshwara said on Monday.

“We have a disciplinary committee in our hierarchy which will look into the allegations. If the allegations are made by our party workers, they will be summoned before the committee. If those who made the charges are outsiders, then we will take legal recourse,” he said while reacting to the widespread allegations that the Congress tickets were being sold.

“I have come to know from media reports that a committee has been formed under the chairmanship of Antony- ji (A?K?Antony) to probe the allegations. We will abide by the decision of the committee and the high command,” said Parameshwara.

Tainted candidates

Defending the selection of some 'tainted' candidates, Parameshwara said that they will remain in the race till charges are proved against them. The question was specifically posed in regard to former minister D K?Shivakumar, against whom cases have been registered by the Lokayukta and other agencies.

“Allegations will always be made against MLAs. The Congress has always asked ministers, against whom criminal charges have been filed, to resign. But, we have never asked them to quit as MLAs. There is a difference between allegations against a minister and an MLA,” he said.

While admitting that there may have been some 'insignificant' errors in selecting candidates, Parameshwara said more Youth Congress leaders would figure in the next list.

“We have given 67 tickets, of the 177 names announced, to those below 45 years. Those with better educational background also have been included to ensure that the party is in sync with the younger generation,”?he said.

Parameshwara and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Siddaramiah, who was also present, dismissed reports of infighting in the party over selection of candidates. “We are all united. All those claims of infighting are baseless. The party has tried to choose the right candidates for the right constituencies,” Parameshwara said.

Siddaramiah said: “Till date, I?have not said a single word that would malign Parameshwara. I think this should answer all the rumours fuelled by our detractors.”

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
