Tanker inferno: Survivors narrate their great escapes

Puttur, Apr 10: The Perne road tragedy has made chill run down the spine of the locals who saw the incident happen right in front of their eyes. With prayer on their lips, the survivors of the incident, who have become witnessed to the tragedy say that they were probably a bit more lucky because they survived the catastrophic embrace of the same.

“I was purchasing some bakery items from a line salesman at my shop when I saw a fuel tanker run down the gorge. Within fraction of seconds, there was a blast with intense fire. Thick smoke blew up in shapes of mushrooms in the air, eating up not just the tanker but several thinks around the spot. I was hypnotized for a while and could not comprehend what was happening in front of my eyes,” says Umar Salimar, a witness to the incident who says that without clue he ran in opposite direction to save his life.

Even as Umar ran to escape from the fire, his saw his shop razed down. As soon as the incident happened, Umar saw coconut trees melt down like candles. Within no time the fire engulfed nearby houses and properties.

Turning point

There is a precarious turn at the spot where the mishap occurred. Just 20 kms from this spot there is another similar deep curve. The locals residents say that if at all the mishap had occurred in that curve, the magnitude of loss could have been beyond imagination because there is an educational institute situated right at this curve. Having seen irreversible losses, the local residents only urge the authorities to take measures to avert accidents on this stretch of road.

Putthu Monu, the savior

Putthu Monu from Gadiyar has been the savior in cases of several mishaps that happen on the National Highway in the region. Even on the day Perne road mishap took place and claimed several lives, Putthu Monu rushed to the spot and did all possible things to extinguish the fire.

Putthu Monu has been an expert in lifting the vehicles fallen into gorge in mishaps using pulleys. Even here, he tried to lift up a part of the tanker from mishap spot and also extended all possible help to bring the fire under control.

Great escapes

While eight people succumbed to the fatal fire flames in the mishap, a three-month old baby survived miraculously. The fire set ablaze residence of Abbas situated just 100 mts from the accident spot. While Abbas's sister-in-law Safiya (25) and his mother Hajimma (70) suffered serious burn injuries, his three-month old baby was found safe amidst the charred remains of the house.

Meanwhile, a garage owner survived the incident due to his stars. The owner of Sharavu auto works, Chandrashekar had left the garage just few minutes before the mishap. Today, though Chandrashekar mourns for his sole source of income, the garage, which has been reduced to ashes, he is glad that he has survived to built it again.

However, several people could save their lives by sensing trouble and running away from the spot.

Mangaluru: The Mangaluru CEN police have arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly posting provocative and misleading content on an Instagram page named “mr_a_titude”, targeting the Bajpe police.

Mangaluru Commissioner of Police Sudheer Kumar Reddy C H identified the arrested as Abhishek M, a resident of Katipalla in Mangaluru.

A case has been registered at the Bajpe Police Station under Sections 353(1)(c), 353(2), 56, and 57 read with Section 189 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the post.

According to police, the accused uploaded a photograph of a hotel on the Instagram page and alleged that accused persons in a murder case under the Bajpe police jurisdiction were being given “royal treatment” by the police, including being served beef meals daily from the hotel.

The post further accused the police of supporting criminals, misusing their authority, and betraying public trust. Police said the content was provocative in nature and aimed at inciting public outrage against the police.

Following the post, a case was registered at the Bajpe police station, and further investigation was transferred to the CEN police station.

Police records indicate that the accused has a criminal history, with multiple cases registered against him, including murder, attempt to murder, assault, and robbery at the Surathkal Police Station, and one case at the Kaup Police Station.

The Commissioner said the accused was traced and arrested using technical evidence.

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
