Mangalore, Apr 11: The festival of Chandramana Ugadi which falls on Thursday heralds the beginning of a new year according to the Hindu lunar calendar. It marks the beginning of spring and the beginning of a new era. Hence this festival is welcomed and celebrated with joy and happiness in households in the southern part of the country.

Although observed with great fervour in the Deccan region of India, in the coastal belt of Karnataka it is mostly the Gowd Saraswat Brahmins who celebrate Ugadi, for people in Tulunadu follow customs and traditions different from the rest. It is a day when family and friends get together and pray for general well-being. Family members clean the house thoroughly and decorate it with mango 'toranas' and 'rangolis'.

In Tulunadu, most people celebrate the Souramana Ugadi, popularly known as Bisu. Falling on April 14 this year, this festival celebrated by Tuluvas marks the beginning of the year according to the solar calendar.

Celebrated by Gowd Saraswat Brahmins and those having settled in Mangalore from the region of Mysore, Ugadi is a time to start the new year afresh with new hopes and expectations. There is a festive mood in the air as families get together and celebrate the festival in a traditional way. Inseparable from the festival are items such as Bevu-bella, Neem leaves and jaggery, which is shared and consumed with great zeal by young and old alike. The day is also marked by the reading of the panchanga (the yearly calendar) and greeting one another.

Derived from the Sankrit words 'Yuga' and 'Aadi' meaning era and beginning, Ugadi literally means the beginning of a new era and is considered an auspicious day for new beginnings and ventures. Legend has it that the creator Brahma began his series of creations on this day. Hence, the day is believed to set things moving towards the better.

Dressed in new clothes, each member of the family is filled with enthusiasm during this day. Seeking the welfare of loved ones, special rituals, poojas and prayers are offered in temples by families to mark this auspicious day.

Household members visit the temple, followed by the recital of the panchanga and forecast for the entire year ahead. Special dishes are prepared and served on this special day such as tender cashew upkari, mango upkari, podi and payasam which are greatly savoured by all during lunch.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.
