Mangalore, Apr 11: Contending that the 'Ramothsav' to be organized by few saffron organisations at Nehru Maidan here from April 19 to April 21 was a violation of the election code of conduct, members of Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike (KKSV), Dakshina Kannada have written a letter to the District Commissioner urging him not to allow the event to take place.
Several litterateurs, cultural leaders and educational scholars were to attend the programme. However, according to news reports, a three-day programme called 'Ramothsav' was scheduled to be held in Mangalore in the coming days. At present, several senior BJP leaders have yet again raised the issue of the construction of a Ram Mandir to attract vote banks in the view of the upcoming Assembly elections in the state. The letter states that there was a need to look at the three-day programme in this particular backdrop, as it would amount to a violation of the election code of conduct.
As it was customary to set-up shrines and bhajan mandir in private backyards on religious occasions, it was not traditional to organise such an event at a public place for three days. It is also necessary to note that the organisations behind the event were affiliated to the Sangh Parivar, among which most were involved in unconstitutional activities such as moral policing, harassment of minorities and murder, contented the members of the Vedike in the letter, urging the District Commissioner and other authorities to take immediate measures in the matter.
A copy of the letter has been forwarded to Chief Election Commissioner, Karnataka.
