Sudhakar Rama Poojary, Sudhakar was convicted for murder in 2001.
It is said that he is the first in the state in the last few years to graduate from IGNOU under the prison inmate category.
He enrolled for IGNOU's BA programme in 2004. “I had to drop out for some reasons, but I resumed the course again later,” Sudhakar told reporters at the convocation.
Escorted by police personnel, Sudhakar received his degree like any other IGNOU student from R Venkata Rao, Vice-Chancellor, National Law School of India University, at the 26th annual convocation.
“My electives were history, economics, political science and sociology. I have already enrolled for master's programme in public administration. I am preparing for an exam in June,” he said.
Sudhakar was visibly nerved when asked about his crime. “That is an episode from my life that I am trying hard to forget.” He said he committed murder in 2000 and was convicted a year later and sentenced to life imprisonment.
“It is not easy to study inside the prison. One becomes depressed and I had to overcome that feeling. I took it as a challenge,” he said, adding that he also teaches his fellow inmates. According to his police escorts, there are more than 60 people in Parappana Agrahara who are involved in academic work.
“What Sudhakar has done upholds the right of a prisoner for education. People like him can change the conservation notions that prisons have attached to them,” said an IGNOU official.
