Addressing media persons at a news conference in Mangalore on Saturday, Mr. Abraham said that he, on April 10, sought sanction for investigation against Union ministers Rehman Khan and Mallikarjun Kharge and MLAs Qamrul Islam, Roshan Baig, N A Haaris and Tanveer Sait with the offices of the Prime Minister and the Speaker of Karnataka Assembly respectively. Complaints against them have also been filed by him with the Lokayukta Court, he said.
Mr. Abraham said that he took up the job of exposing Wakf irregularities on the behest of a Muslim organisation which approached him for help.
“I have been painted as an anti-Muslim activist by some people, especially here in Mangalore. But I would want to inform that it was a Muslim organisation that came to me asking my help in exposing the irregularities that have been carried out in Wakf properties. Many of our poor Muslim brethren have been deprived of their rightful facilities and they have all been swallowed by leaders who were at the helm of affairs over a period of 40 years”, Mr. Abraham said.
The offences committed by the MPs and MLAs named include abuse of their power as public servants, indulging in illegal siphoning of funds, misuse, encroachment and disposal of Wakf properties in the state and also offences concerning acquisition of disproportionate assets illegally.
Although the Karnataka State Minorities Commission has prepared a report on the misuse of Wakf properties, it is hand in glove with the stakeholders and a systematic attempt to bury the facts to save the offenders has been made by the Commission, Mr. Abraham alleged.
The total estimated amount of irregularities in Wakf properties in Karnataka is around Rs. 2 lakh crores at the present day market value, Mr. Abraham said.
Protest against Tipu University cancelled
Mr. Abraham said on the occasion that the scheduled protest at Nettarakere near Farangipet area of the district against setting up of Tipu Sultan University at Srirangapatna, has been cancelled.
“We had planned to hold the protest tomorrow (Sunday) and Christians from various parts of the state including Chamarajnagar, Bangalore, Hunsur, Kushalnagar and Madikeri were supposed to attend. But since our Bishop Dr. Aloysius Paul D'Souza has ordered us to cancel the protest, we are bound by his directive and have withdrawn the demonstration”, Mr. Abraham informed.
