Over the last few days, the vendors running tender coconut business have not come to do their business because there is no supply of tender coconut.
Prices shoot up
While the cost of a tender coconut varies between Rs 15 to Rs 17, during this peak season and due to shortage of supply, the cost has gone up to Rs 20 to Rs 25. Superior variety of tender coconut known as 'Gendali' costs Rs 30.
It is said that since it was Ugadi festival on April 11 and then there was Bisu festival on April 14, most workers had taken leave for a period of five days, due to which there had been no supply. The market will be supplied with tender coconut within a couple of days, say the sources adding that the entire problem was caused due to shortage of workers in Tamilnadu owing to 'Bisu festival'.
A vendor at Mannagudda area of the city says that he sees a business of over 200 tender coconuts per day but over the last few days his customers had to go back unattended as there was no stock to quench their thirst.
All said and done, shortage of tender coconut has added to the heat this summer.
