Mangalore, April 17: Senior Congress leader B Janardhana Poojary has claimed that there is no rebellion within the Congress party in Dakshina Kannada district with regard to Assembly election related issues.

Addressing media persons at a news conference in Mangalore on Wednesday, Mr. Poojary sought to clarify that a false propaganda is being spread in the region that the Congress party has been hit by internal rebellion.

“There is no confusion. Everyone has a right to demand election ticket irrespective of caste and religion. But it is Congress' culture that once the high command takes a decision, all loyal partymen abide by it”, Mr. Poojary said.

On the issue of fellow Congressman Vijay Kumar Shetty intending to contest the election as an independent candidate in the wake of a ticket being denied to him in the Surathkal constituency, Mr. Poojary said that he had spoken to Mr. Shetty and sorted the matter out.

“I told Vijay Kumar Shetty that he is one of the key people in the region who have worked for the Congress party over the years. I told the same to his followers and party workers of the region and asked them and Mr. Shetty as to whether they would want to kill the party and allow the BJP to reign supreme again. Like a true Congressman, Mr. Shetty decided against contesting as an independent candidate and has expressed his willingness to work for the party during this election. Same is the case with Hemaraj Shetty in Puttur. They have put the party before their individual interests now and have become role models for others in the party”, Mr. Poojary said.

The veteran leader however did not say the same about Vasanth Salian who has decided to contest from the JD(S) in Kaup. “Do not cheat the party Mr. Salian. It was I who helped you in getting a ticket for the first time. Do not turn your back on the party because you lost”, Mr. Poojary said.

Rubbishing the charge that the Congress has been over-compassionate towards minority candidates in distributing tickets in the district this time, Mr. Poojary said that the decision of the party high command is based on the secular principles it believes in.

“There are allegations that we have appeased minority candidates more this time. Out of the total 13 constituencies in the undivided Dakshina Kannada district, 4 have been given to minority candidates including 2 Muslim, 1 Christian and 1 Jain. What about the rest of the 9 constituencies? Are they not Hindus? This is also used as a ploy by the BJP to cash on Hindu votes. But all this is false propaganda against us. We have distributed tickets based on the secular principles we believe in. How many Christian and Muslim candidates is the BJP fielding?” Mr. Poojary asked.

On the issue of the bomb blast near BJP office in Bangalore, Mr. Poojary said that he is not aware as to who is behind the blast or what the actual status is but maintained that strict action must be taken against the culprits no matter which party or group they belong to.

Briefing about the Congress party's election preparations, Mr. Poojary said that AICC Chief Sonia Gandhi will be visiting Mangalore for poll campaign but refused to reveal the date of her visit.

Informing that he will personally carry out 'Padayatras' in the region to campaign for the party, Mr. Poojary said that more importance would be given to Sullia, Puttur and Mangalore (North) constituencies where Congress has been relatively weaker over the years.

U T Khader, party candidate for Mangalore (Ullal) constituency, J R Lobo, party candidate for Mangalore (South) constituency, Kodijal Ibrahim, Interim District President of the party, were present among other Congress leaders.

Hassan MP and Lok Sabha election candidate of the BJP-JD(S) alliance Prajwal Revanna, who is facing an inquiry over the alleged sexual abuse of several women, said the truth will prevail.

The MP, who left the country as soon as the election to his constituency ended, has also sought seven days' time to appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Karnataka government to inquire into the huge cache of about 3,000 explicit videos and photos allegedly pertaining to him, which have gone viral on social media.

“As I am not in Bangalore to attend the enquiry, I have communicated to CID Bangalore through my advocate. Truth will prevail soon,” Prajwal, grandson of former prime minister and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda, said in a post on X.

A case has been registered against MLA and former minister H D Revanna and his son Prajwal at Holenarasipura on a complaint lodged by their former cook and relative for allegedly sexually harassing her.

She also alleged that Prajwal made video calls to her daughter and spoke in an objectionable manner, which forced her to block him.

The MP who is seeking re-election from Hassan on a JD(S) ticket, shared a letter by his lawyer Arun G to the Deputy Superintendent of Police of the SIT, in which he has sought seven days' time to appear before the official because he is abroad.

Several women, believed to be victims of Prajwal Revanna, have left their homes in Karnataka's Hassan district over the last ten days, according to media reports.

These departures reportedly come amid fear and stigma after their identities became public due to the circulating video clips showing the women who were allegedly sexually assaulted by Prajwal Revanna.

"The entire district is in H D Revanna’s control. You speak ill about them and chances are high that it will reach them, because the family and the party have a large following," a shopkeeper in Hagare - 20 km from Hassan – was quoted as saying by the news paper.

Hassan is the bastion of the JD(S) supremo Deve Gowda, and Prajwal, his grandson, is the sitting MP.

The family of the woman whose complaint was the basis of the first FIR against Prajwal has now left their home, the publication reported, citing a neighbour who said, "The woman worked at Revanna’s house as a house help. Some of her videos started to circulate and then, her house was seen locked. We don’t know when she left."

Notably, a former Zilla Panchayat member has also filed a rape case against Prajwal, and in that village many women who worked for the party formerly are now incommunicado, a JD(S) leader told the publication. "We noticed many of the party women deleting their photos with Prajwal on social media. In some instances, men are questioning their wives about their association with the MP. It is shattering the lives of many women in the district," he said.

The local leader added that the former Zilla Panchayat member was there on April 24, but no one had seen the family since the videos came out.

The case is currently being probed by an SIT team and when they reached the Revanna residence, party workers were reportedly heard talking about the women. "I know this woman, she lived close to our residence and was very active in JD(S) activities. Her house is locked… she has small children," one said, as per IE.

Another shopkeeper added, "It was really wrong to reveal the faces of the women. I know some of them, and they have gone into hiding. We don’t know whether they can return."

He noted that it is impossible to survive in Hassan while fighting a case against the Revanna family.

While Prajwal's father, H D Revanna is in SIT custody, a Blue Corner notice has been issued against the sitting MP.
