Mangalore, Apr 20: D V Sadananda Gowda, the former chief minister, has always enjoyed a distinguished position within the party circles. A tactful speaker, star campaigner and several other roles rolled into one is DVS. But, of late, this top leader has been kept himself away from limelight for reasons unknown.

However, it is believed that DVS had been dedicating most of his time and energy in Puttur constituency, literally working for the victory of the BJP candidate there.

According to the sources close to Mr Gowda, he has taken Puttur constituency as a prestige issue and his sole aim is to defeat Congress candidate Shakunthala Shetty. In this direction, Mr Gowda is said to have chalked out intensive campaign strategy, which also includes preventing his own relatives from showing loyalty to other parties.

Amidst the talks that BJP's candidate Sanjeeva Mattanduru does not hold a chance in Puttur in front of Ms Shetty, Mr Gowda is combating rebellion from his own relatives. The fact that Mr Gowda's relative Dinesh is contesting from the JD(S) is certainly a cause of worry for Mr Gowda.

The connections

Mr Gowda is in a fix. While he is extensively working for his close relative and BJP candidate Sanjeeva Mattanduru, he cannot deny the fact that over the last 18 years Dinesh, who is now the JD(S) candidate has worked sincerely for making Gowda's political career.

There is a sense of disappointment felt from various quarters over the fact that when it came to selecting between Mattanduru and Dinesh, Gowda chose Mattanduru. Disheartened by the attitude, Dinesh was compelled to join the JD(S).

Now with the two close relatives in fray, division of Okkaliga votes, which plays a decisive role in Puttur, is certain. The advantage of this division will be cashed by the Congress.

Rebel

It is said that Dinesh had started revolting against Mr Gowda when he became the CM. To subdue any upheaval and to pacify Dinesh, he was made the trustee of a temple.

Sometime ago, Shakunthala Shetty had thrown an open challenge to Mr Gowda to fight her out in the polls. Mr Gowda accepted the challenge in the form of Sanjeeva Mattanduru. But, today Mr Gowda is not just fighting Ms Shetty but he is found fighting his own people.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
