Bangalore/Gulbarga, May 2: Congress president Sonia Gandhi Thursday sought a clear mandate for her party to provide a stable government in Karnataka, which, she alleged, had slipped on development due to the BJP misrule in the past five years.

"Cast your vote for change. Cast your vote for the Congress to bring back the glory of Karnataka. Give us a clear mandate to provide a stable government in the state," Gandhi said at a public meeting in Bangalore ahead of the elections to the state legislative assembly May 5.

She urged the electorate to exercise their vote without fear or favour to bring the Congress back to power in the state and ensure all-round development.

"Unlike other parties, especially the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party), the Congress does not make false or empty promises. We are committed to implement all policies and programmes given in our manifesto," she asserted.

"You have seen how the BJP government had let you down by squandering the mandate you gave it five years ago," Gandhi told about 20,000 people who waited for more than two hours in sweltering heat for her arrival by a chopper from Gulbarga, about 650 km from here.

Lavishing praise on Bangalore for its rich history, weather and people, the Congress chief said the city was once the pride of India and other cities looked up to it to as it was known for its state-run enterprises, education, research and development and ushering in the IT revolution in the country.

"Bangalore is a city of entrepreneurs and innovation. It is a cosmopolitan city with people from different states, languages and cultural backgrounds living together in harmony. Likewise, the state was known to be progressive and development oriented."

"Sadly, all this is history, as the BJP has let its people down by neglecting its infrastructure, power and water supply, housing and other basic amenities," Gandhi said.

Reiterating that the time has come to change governance by throwing out the corrupt BJP from power in the state, Gandhi said if voted to power, the Congress would work for the people of all sections without distinction or discrimination.

"The BJP government had acquired a dubious reputation of looting the state's resources, especially minerals, indulging in monumental corruption, land-grabbing and facilitated illegal mining. This is the time for change in the state for development," she said.

The Congress chief began her 15-minute speech in English from a written script by apologising to the public for being two hours behind schedule from a day-long whirlwind tour of the state during the second leg of her electioneering.

Earlier in the day, addressing a huge gathering at Gulbarga in the northern region of the state, Gandhi said the BJP government should give an account of how it spent funds allotted to the state for various schemes by the United Progressive Alliance central government.

"The people of Karnataka have right to know how central funds granted to the state government have been used and what assets have been created through our flagship scheme like the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA).

"The BJP government has to give an account of how it had spent about Rs.88,000 crore the central government had given to the state during the last five years for various programmes," Gandhi said addressing the public in Hindi from a written script.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
