Mysore, May 4: The KJP candidate from the Varuna constituency Ka Pu Siddalinga Swamy was allegedly beaten up by the supporters of his Congress rival Siddaramaiah in the city on Friday.
Swamy, who complained of uneasiness during a dharna after the alleged assault, was treated at a hospital and later discharged.
Siddaramaiah's supporters allegedly blocked Swamy's car, by placing stones and parking cars haphazardly on the road, near the archgate of Hotel Lalith Mahal Palace around 11.50 am.
The Congress workers had an argument with Swamy, who was seated in the front seat, accusing him of distributing money to lure the voters.
Taluk Panchayat member and Swamy's associate Mahadevaswamy said that even though they told Congress workers that they were not distributing money and were only returning from the Chamundeshwari temple as it was a Friday, the?rival group telephoned poll officers.
By the time poll officials reached the spot, ?the two groups had heated exchanges.
Swamy, his gunman Arun and Mahadevaswamy were allegedly assaulted by the Congress workers.
The police arrived at the spot and dispersed the two groups by using mild force. A flying poll squad checked Swamy's vehicle only to find a small amount of cash but it was not seized, Mysore Deputy Commissioner C?Shikha said.
Situation tense
Later, Swamy told the media that Siddaramaiah's son Rakesh was behind the attack. Rakesh was reportedly found sitting in a car, belonging to a Congress MLA, in the area.
The situation was tense near the Deputy Commissioner's office as Swamy and his supporters staged a dharna for several hours there.
They raised slogans against Siddaramaiah and Congress leader and former DGP L Revanasiddaiah.
On a complaint by Swamy, the Nazarbad police have registered a case against Rakesh and 10 others under Sections including 307 (murder attempt), 506 (issuing murder threat), 341 (waylaying) and 324 (assault) of IPC.
The incident is apparently a fallout of the skirmish between the workers of two parties on Wednesday when Siddaramaiah visited Karya village, the native place of Swamy, for campaigning.
