Kundapur, May 8: It was cake-walk for independent candidate Halady Srinivas Shetty as he defeated his rivals Kishor Kumar of BJP and Malyadi Shivaram Shetty of Congress. He won by a huge margin of 40611 votes.
It was the most interesting political battle in Udupi district as Mr. Halady, proved a point to the BJP top brass for treating him in a cavalier manner.
Mr. Halady had resigned as MLA and quit the BJP last year, after he was denied a berth in Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar's cabinet at the last moment, despite being assured of it by the BJP leadership.
He has been the senior-most BJP MLA in the district eve since he made his debut in the 1999 Assembly election by defeating Congress strongman Pratapachandra Shetty from Kundapur.
He was re-elected from the same constituency in 2004 when he defeated Congress candidate Ashok Kumar Shetty with an increased margin of 19,700 votes. He scored hat-trick when he defeated Congress candidate K Jayaprakash Hegde by a margin of 25,083 votes in 2008 Assembly elections.
The Congress has fielded Malyady Shivaram Shetty, who had twice served as president of Kundapur Block Congress Committee, while the BJP has fielded former president Kundapur APMC Kishore Kumar. However no strategies and calculation from both national giants stood a chance in front of the popularity of this independent candidate.
