Honnavar, May 15: A 58-year-old man was killed and seven others sustained injuries when the tempo traveler in when they were travelling in collided with a lorry at Manki in Honnavar taluk of Uttara Kannada district.
The deceased has been identified as Gopalakrishna Adiga, an official cook of Pejawar Mutt pontiff Sri Vishwesha Teertha Swamiji. He was a resident of Kodangala near Alevoor in Udupi district. The seven others, who sustained injuries, are also said to be Swamiji's entourage.
The incident occurred Tuesday evening when Swamiji and his team were on their way back to Mutt after performing pooja in Dandeli.
While Swamiji and his disciple were travelling in a car, other members of his team were travelling in tempo traveler.
Sources said that the tempo driver, in a bid to over take another vehicle, collided head-on with the oncoming lorry. The injured are recovering a hospital.
A case has been registered at jurisdictional Honnavar police station.
