The victim Adam alias Adam Palla (33), a resident of Shanthi Angadi near Kaikamba was on rounds when the attack took place on Thursday. Adam who identifies himself with the Congress has alleged that the attackers were members of the SDPI who were out to settle some scores.
Adam informed that at about 8.50 am, on the day of the attack a youth hired his auto and asked him to drive the auto to a place called Brahmarakudlu nearby.
On reaching an interior road, the youth gave Adam a slip and soon his auto was waylaid by a car. Four men in their late twenties came out of the car and instantaneously threw chilli powder at Adam and then attacked him with iron rods. However, Adam managed to escape the attack.
According to Adam, a clash had ensued between SDPI and Congress workers during the day of recent Assembly elections held on May 5. Adam had been present on the spot working at a Congress booth in Kodangi polling station in Bantwal. “The SDPI members had issued me a threat following the clash. The assault must be their doing,” he said.
Although he did not recognise the men, he said that they did not appear to be locals. He also said that one of the men spoke to the others in Beary language, during the attack.
He suffered severe injuries on his arm, back and groin, and was admitted to a hospital on Thursday. He is currently undergoing medical treatment at a private hospital in Mangalore.
A case has been registered in Bantwal rural police station.
