Udupi, Jun 20: While mechanized boats have dropped anchor taking a one and a half month holiday from fishing activity, the traditional boats on the other hand have geared up for sea sailing.
Fishermen, who will resort to fishing with traditional boats from now on in the absence of mechanized boats, performed the traditional 'Samudra Pooje' at Malpe on Wednesday.
Poojas and Homas were performed at Bennekudru Mahasthri temple, Uchila's Shrimahalaxmi temple and Malpe's Vadabaandeshwara temple.
A mass prayer was held at the sea wherein the 'prasadam' was offered under the leadership of Govinda Suvarna, Vice President, Malpe Naadadoni Meenugaarara Sangha.
The fisher folk prayed to the sea to praying for safety to those dependent on it. Fishermen have already taken to the sea on their traditional boats.
Since it is that time of the year when fish lay eggs, the annual deep sea fishing ban has been enforced for mechanized boats from June 15 to August 10. Traditional boats and boats with a maximum of 10 HP motor are permitted to carry out fishing during this period.
More than 20,000 fishermen will take to the sea in about 8,000 traditional boats from Udupi district. Traditional boat fishing is known to bring fishermen of all communities together and is often regarded as a tool to maintain communal harmony.
People of coastal belt get to eat fish in rainy season due to the hard yards put in by these traditional fishermen.
