On March 7, election for 207 ULBs were held and the results were out on March 9. If the then BJP government at the State had brought out the reservation, then the Urban Local Bodies would have had performed for three months by now.
But, Since the 50 per cent reservation rule was contested at the Court, the Shettar Government failed to do the needful with regard to the reservation and by the meantime Assembly polls were announced. With the Election Code of Conduct in place, nothing could be done for two months. While the ULB members thought that the new Government will immediately bring in the reservations, it has been one and half months since the Congress came to power and nothing has been done so far.
Without the list of Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and the Presidents and Vice-Presidents of the Urban Local Bodies being released, the members of these bodies cannot be sworn in.
It is said that the Mayor, President-Vice-Presidents reservation list has been prepared about two months ago, in accordance with the 50 per cent reservation for women, as directed by the High Court.
However, the Ministers concerned and the Chief minister has not spared a second to look into this list because it has been prepared by the officials. If this list is released as it is then there are all possibilities of their own party members being denied power.
Hence, the Ministers want to make sure that the list makes all necessary arrangements to give as much benefits as possible to their own people.
Now that the Parliamentary polls are round the corner, the reservation list will either be released soon or it will be further delayed.
But as per the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act, Section 10 the election of the chiefs and the second in command should be completed within one month of the elections and meeting must be conducted.
All in all the delay has certainly put the Congress government to shame.
