Bangalore, Aug 3: The Congress on Friday decided to field D K Suresh, brother of former Karnataka minister D K Shivakumar, from Bangalore Rural Parliamentary constituency, while Kannada actor Ramya is likely to enter the electoral battle for the party from the Mandya Lok Sabha segment.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Karnataka State Congress President G Parameshwara, who held a meeting with the party's Karnataka in-charge general secretary Digvijay Singh here, submitted the names for clearance.

Though sources in the party said that both Suresh and Ramya will file nominations on Saturday, the last day for nominations, the party is yet to announce the candidates' names officially.

For the Bangalore Rural Lok Sabha seat, the party recommended only D K Suresh's name, while Ramya and former MLA L R Shivaramegowda had been recommended for the Mandya seat. Though Suresh's name was approved by the party high command, for the Mandya constituency the party had asked State leaders to recommend only one name.

Ramya agreed to contest the poll, but she reportedly also requested the party high command to guarantee a ticket for her in the 2014 election irrespective of the outcome of the by-poll. Though the party did not promise anything, it is learnt that the leaders convinced Ramya to contest the by-poll.

Apart from Siddaramaiah, it is learnt that Ramya also has strong backing from former chief minister S M Krishna, former minister D K Shivakumar and housing minister Ambarish.

By-elections to Bangalore Rural and Mandya Lok Sabha constituencies will be held on August 21, and the counting will take place on August 24.

The by-poll was necessitated after H D Kumarawamy (Lok Sabha member from the Bangalore Rural constituency) and Chaluvarayaswamy (Lok Sabha member from the Mandya constituency) resigned from Parliament to contest assembly elections in Karnataka.

Meanwhile, the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) on Friday decided to field Anitha Kumaraswamy, wife of the party's State president H D Kumaraswamy, from Bangalore Rural constituency. The party nominee for Mandya constituency, C S Puttaraju, filed his nomination papers on Friday.

The BJP is understood to have entered into a tacit understanding with the JD-S for the bypoll. Accordingly, the party will not field its candidates in either constituency, to help the JD-S, which in turn will help the BJP in the coming by-elections to three Legislative Council seats.

Speaking to reporters, JD-S chief H D Deve Gowda said: “Anitha Kumarswamy will file nominations tomorrow (on Saturday). I will also accompany her. While we have not forged any alliance with any political party for the by-elections, the Left parties have expressed their interest in an alliance by writing us a letter of support.”

The Congress, on its part, has sought the support of Samajwadi Party MLA from Channapatna C P Yogeshwar in the by-poll to Bangalore rural seat.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.
