
Mangalore, Aug 21: The BJP led by former chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda will convene a meeting in Shimoga on August 25 to discuss the course of action in their fight demanding suitable compensation for areca growers of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Shimoga and Chikmagalur districts, the regions where areca crops have been affected by fruit rot disease.
Addressing a news conference former minister B Nagaraj Shetty said that former deputy chief minister Eshwarappa, BJP state President Prahalad Joshi will also be present in the meeting.
Mr Shetty said that incessant rains have caused rot disease which has claimed over 60 per cent of the crops grown in these areas.
In DK district alone 30,000 hectares are cultivated with areca and now the farmers are in distress as there is no way out.
Shetty urged the Central government to implement Gorak Singh Committee recommendations, to help the growers.
A team from Central and state government should visit DK and Udupi districts to assess the damage, he demanded.
