Mangalore, Aug 24: Towards providing better sanitation among economically-backward families in Dakshina Kannada, Abu Dhabi-based Bearys Welfare Forum (BWF) has undertaken 'BWF – Shauchalaya' project under which new toilets would be constructed for 52 poor families.
The launching ceremony of the project was held at Sahodaya Hall, Balmatta here on Saturday, in which DK district-in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai handed over the allotted sum to the beneficiaries.
Speaking after launching the project, Mr Rai surprised everyone with a spontaneous traditional 'As-salaam-alaikum' and said that it was essential that everyone should work towards social change and welfare of the society. “Under the guidance of the Almighty, we should strive towards creating a better society, by offering economic, social and educational support to the downtrodden and the poor,” he said, lauding the efforts of the forum and its committee members.
Mangalore North MLA B A Moideen Bava said that for a better society, it was necessary to work together to uplift the social conditions of the backward families that have limited access to basic necessities. “It is our responsibility to ensure that such facilities provided by the state government are benefited by the needy families in the society,” he said.
In his introductory remarks, Abdulla Madumole said that BWF had constructed 33 toilets for poor families last year, and this year the organisation had identified 52 families in the district for whom toilets would be constructed at a cost of Rs 15,000 each as social service.
Former president of Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy M B Abdul Rahman and president of Al-wafa Trust Mohammed Badruddin also spoke on the occasion.
Former minister for higher education B A Moidin delivered the presidential address.
BWF vice-president Sheikh Bava welcomed the gathering and co-ordinator Mohammed Rafeeq Krishnapura proposed a vote of thanks. K S Aboobaker recited the qiraath on the occasion.
