Second electoral defeat for Deve Gowda's kin in four months

August 24, 2013
Bangalore, Aug 24: JD-S president and former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda's daughter-in-law Anita Kumaraswamy Saturday suffered her second poll defeat within four months, that too in the area considered the party's stronghold.

Anita, married to Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) state chief and former chief minister H. D. Kumaraswamy, Saturday lost to D. K. Suresh of the ruling Congress in Bangalore Rural Lok Sabha constituency for which bypoll was held along with Mandya seat on Aug 21.

In the May 5 assembly election, she was defeated in Channapatna, which is part of Bangalore Rural constituency, by C. P. Yogeeshwara of Samajwadi Party. Channapatna is about 60 kms from Bangalore.

Her Saturday's loss is a double whammy for the Gowda family whose word is the final in JD-S, which is ridiculed by other political parties as "thande-makkala paksha (father and sons party)".

The Bangalore Rural seat was held by her husband. Kumaraswamy had won the seat in 2009 by around 130,000 votes, almost the same margin by which Anita lost the seat Saturday.

He quit the seat on getting elected to Karnataka assembly in the May 5 elections from Ramanagaram constituency, which is also part of Bangalore Rural Lok Sabha seat.

Anita is a businesswoman. This was her third election.

She had won a bypoll to Karnataka assembly in December 2008 from Madhugiri in Tumkur district, about 100 kms from here.

She was shifted to Channapatna for the May 5 assembly poll as Kumaraswamy was confident that she would win from there as he was contesting from the neighbouring Ramanagaram constituency.

With Gowda family's calculations going wrong twice within four months, a shocked Kumaraswamy said he would quit as JD-S state chief and also as leader of the opposition in the assembly.

Fielding Anita again for a poll so soon after she had lost one had evoked derisive comments from the Congress which went to town that its description of JD-S as a "family affair" was proven beyond doubt.

Gowda had laboured hard to defend the decision telling campaign meetings that he had fielded Anita not because she was his daughter-in-law but because JD-S workers wanted her to contest.

He had tried to hit back at the Congress saying that it is a "mother and son party". He had also accused the Congress of indulging in "family politics" as the Suresh is the brother of Congress legislator and former minister D.K. Suresh Kumar.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
