Delivering the inaugural address at 'Guruvandana', a teachers' day celebration programme in honour of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, organised by Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, Department of Public Instruction, Mangalore South Block Teachers' Day Committee and Block Education Office, Mangalore South, at A B Shetty Hall, Bunts Hostel here on Thursday, he said that the youth of today lacked knowledge of the culture and constitution of our country. The working class should be made aware of available opportunities through education. In this direction, teachers should contribute towards providing valuable education, he said.
Dean of PG Department at Roshni Nilaya School of Social Work Dr Rameela Shekhar said that a child witnesses several actions by their peers contradictory to what they are taught at home and at school. The child will look at teachers for an answer to such contradictions. Today, the moral values that should be taught to children are being neglected in schools. It is only the teachers themselves who can change the existing moral education system in educational institutions, she said.
Speaking on the role of teachers, she said that we expect our children to learn as much as possible. However, children also need awareness along with information. They need answers for their questions and only teachers can satisfy this curiosity.
“Today, many children develop suicidal tendencies, due to lack of support and attention. It is the responsibility of the teachers to recognise such tendencies in children and provide them guidance. Only teachers have the ability to mould children into being more considerate towards others,” she said.
The programme was presided by corporator D K Ashok. Retired teachers were felicitated on the occasion.
