Bantwal, Sep 5: Minister of Health and Family Welfare U T Khader said that in order to slacken the transfer policy of teachers, he would speak to the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Minister for Higher Education R V Deshpande.

Speaking at 'Guruvandana' programme organised by Dakshina Kannada district and Bantwal taluk teachers' day celebration committees in Bantwal on Thursday, he said that the teachers' transfer policy was reducing the psychological stability of a teacher. In some cases, married couples have to live separately and do their teaching jobs since they are transferred to different places. To avoid this, proper restriction on transfers and an accurate policy is required.

Urging teachers to show love towards their profession, he said, “Love towards teaching will help students perform better academically. Students must develop interest in respecting our nation and work for the development of country but not hinder the development,” he urged.

Delivering the presidential speech, district-in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai said that teachers ought to consider the teaching profession as service to god and teach likewise. “Teachers should strive to provide value-added education as students tend to imitate their teachers. Children and parents place trust in you, hence you should be keen on imparting qualitative education,” he advised teachers.

Principal of Vivekananda College, Puttur Dr Madhava Bhat delivered a special lecture on the occasion.

Several teachers including Jayananda Peraje, Vasudev Rao, Joseph, Rajashree, Chandrashekhar Bhat, Ramesh Naik Mulur, Dharanendra Jain, D N Raghava, Jagadeesh Shetty, Vasanthi, Lakshman Naik and Umesh Gowda were awarded 'District Best teacher' awards on the occasion.

Teachers Ramesh Nayak and Shridhar Rai who had received state-level 'Best teacher' awards last year, and Ramesh Baya and Sanjeeva H who had received district-level 'Best teacher' awards were felicitated in the programme. A total of 38 teachers who took retirement in the year 2012-13 were also felicitated.

Ramanath Rai released a book called 'Educational possibilities' by teacher Bhaskar Adwala on the occasion.

DK Zilla Panchayat president Koragappa Naik, Bantwal taluk panchayat president Lalita Shivappa, DK Kannada Sahitya Parishad president Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, Mangalore DIET principal Palakshappa were present on the occasion among others.

DDPI Moses Jayashekhar welcomed the gathering, and Bantwal Block Education Officer Sheshashayana Karinja rendered a vote of thanks.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
