
Mangalore, Sep 11: The commencement of the centennial birth year of renowned poet, freedom fighter and Kannada activist Dr Kayyara Kinhanna Rai was celebrated as part of Ganeshothsava celebrations by Shree Siddhi Vinayaka Pratishthana and Sarvajanika (Public) Ganeshothsava Samiti, Mangalore at Bunts Hostel here on Tuesday.
Homage was paid to the eminent poet Nadoja Dr Kayyara Kinhanna Rai in the form of recital, song, dance and painting. Selected poems written by Dr Rai were recited, sung and danced to at the programme held in his honour.
In the programme presided over by senior journalist A Eshwaraiah, selected poems written by Dr Rai including'Eth Porluda Bashe','Nethravathi' and'Ikyakavana' were sung and danced to.
Personalities such as Dr Vasanth Kumar Perla, Chandrakala Nandavar, Dr Narendra Rai Derla, Shivaram Kasargod, Dr Maheshwari U and Bhuvanaprasad Hegde elaborated on the various facets of Dr Rai such as being a freedom fighter, nature-lover, teacher and writer.
Renowned artists including Harishchandra Shetty (Harini), Syed Asif Ali, Prasanth Shetty (Chitra Mitra), Reshma Shetty and Dinesh Holla brushed strokes on the drawing easel.
Singers including Jagadeesh Shetty, Ganesh, Gauri Shetty, Swathi Rai and Suraksha Shetty sang poems, while several groups of dancers performed to these poems. Dance was choreographed by Dr Arathi Shetty, Shreelatha Nagaraj and Pramod Alva.
