Mangalore, Sep 12: Street vendors rejoiced and celebrated the passing of the Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending Bill, 2012 in the Lok Sabha by bursting crackers and distributing sweets to passers-by under the banner of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) in front of District Commissioner's office in Mangalore on Thursday.
Speaking on the happy occasion, CITU district general secretary Vasanth Achari said that street vendors were at the mercy of civic body officials and local police after they were forcefully removed from the streets in 2009. CITU had since provided support to the cause of street vendors and conducted several demonstrations including hunger-strikes, road blocks and mass rallies. The passing of the bill has come as a great relief to several street vendors in the district, he said.
CITU district honorary president Sunil Kumar Bajal, president Mohammed Mustafa, DYFI leaders B K Imthiyaz, Yogish Jeppinamogaru, office-bearers Santhosh Balmatta, Hasanabba Bengre and several others were present.
The bill aims to protect the livelihood rights of urban street vendors as well as regulate street vending through segregation of vending zones, and has gone through years of struggle.
The Bill states that at least 2.5 per cent of a city's population would be eligible for vending licences and it would be mandatory to form Town and Zonal Vending Committee in each and every city.
