Mangalore, Sep 17: Karnataka High Court Judge Dr Jawad Rahim has said that giving attention to the victims under law is a must, given the situation that the accused is looked at as'innocent' till he is proven guilty.

During the course of the legal battle, the'innocent' tag given to the accused often brings a lot of pain to the victim or victim's family.

Inaugurating a seminar organized by Post Graduate Department of Social Work, at St Aloysius College, in Mangalore on Tuesday, Justice Rahim said that though his point of view may seem to be controversial, there is an immediate need to prevent further victimization of a victim.

Vouching for monetary compensation for the victims, Justice Rahim said that Government must pay attention towards the same.

“Indian legal system is believed to be the best in the world. Despite this, the crime rate is shooting up day after day,” he said referring to the changes that legal system has been undergoing in sync with the advancement in science and technology.

Referring to Cyber Laws and other new laws that have come into being keeping advanced technologies in mind, he said that while the legal boundaries are changing, the nature of crime too has been undergoing changes.

He opined that only when social problems are addressed effectively, criminals and crime too can be tackled efficiently.

Speaking about divorce cases and the way it is dealt in Muslim communities, he said that in Muslim community, the wife is entitled to get alimony from the husband. If he fails to provide it, his family should and in case even the family is not in a position to do so, then the Wakf Board has to take the responsibility. “This kind of system must be emulated in other communities as well,” he said.

St Aloysius Institutions Rector Fr Denzil Lobo presided while Principal Fr Swebert D'Silva was the chief guest.

Mangaluru, May 4: A tragic incident unfurled last evening in Subrahmanya of Kadaba taluk in Dakshina Kananda, where a young gentleman, who had recently entered the bonds of matrimony a mere ten days hence, met his untimely demise due to a lightning strike.

As twilight descended, a tempestuous thunderstorm, accompanied by billowing rain clouds, cast its shadow over the locale.

Somasundar was diligently engaged in the task of piling up dried nuts in the yard to shield them from the impending deluge, when fate cruelly intervened, subjecting him to the fatal force of a lightning bolt.

Despite the expeditious efforts to convey him to Kadaba Community Hospital subsequent to his sudden indisposition, he tragically succumbed to his injuries.

Somasundar, who operated a car washing enterprise in proximity to Subrahmanya, is mourned by his mother, sister, and wife.
