Little did Amogh (12), student of St Rita's School know that he was about to pay a very heavy price as his counterparts chose him to be a guinea pig for an experimentation from which they wanted to seek some entertainment.
According to Gracia, head teacher of the school, a specific lesson on Sodium and its reaction to water was taught to Class A of 7th Grade. It was not taught to B Division. However, on Friday, the students of both the division were sent to the Chemistry lab for practicals.
Making use of the opportunity some mischievous students of Division A stole some bits of Sodium metal and forced Amogh, a student of Division B to conduct the experiment in the toilet during the leisure hour.
As soon as Amogh dropped the metal into water, the metal reacted furiously, spurted into flame and released hazardous smoke. The smoke reached Amogh's eyes, rendering him blind from one eye and injuring the other eye up to 30 per cent. He has been admitted to a private hospital in Mangalore.
Amogh is the son of Ashok and Asha couple. Ashok is a tailor.
