Mangalore, Sep 24: Charging that certain organisations were trying to create an environment of communal intolerance and disturb the communal harmony in Dakshina Kannada ahead of Lok Sabha polls and religious festivals, members of Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike (KKSV) condemned the announcement of'khadga deeksha' by state executive president of Akhila Bharata Hindu Mahasabha Swami Pranavananda.

Addressing media persons at a press conference here on Tuesday, KKSV president Suresh Bhat Bakrabail said that the choice of Sanskrit terminology to distribute swords to the youth was deliberate and intended to glorify what was obviously an unlawful act.

Stating that the Mahasabha would undertake'khadga deeksha' in order to protect the Hindu religion, the organisation has made ostensible claims that the swords were meant for protecting the country, its women and holy cows. Whereas, possession of lethal arms by individuals and groups is forbidden by the law of the land, he said, indicating that such activities were being organised to instigate communal riots ahead of elections.

“The Ministry of Home Affairs has recently issued a circular to all states warning them of the possibility of communal riots in the near future, and even a slight provocation can trigger a communal flare-up in Dakshina Kannada,” he said.

Members of the Vedike called for immediate and stern legal measures by the authorities with regard to the intended khadga deeksha, and called upon the district administration to initiate necessary legal action against organisers of the unlawful khadga deeksha programme.

Speaking on the occasion, president of People's Union for Civil Liberties – Karnataka P B D'Sa said that the police department ought to have taken suo moto action against the instigators, but failed to do so. Public awareness should be created on the intention of organising communally-disruptive programmes, he said, condemning the attitude of the police department.

Mangalore Central Committee president Ali Hasan said that when members of the Vedike had approached Mangalore (North) police station to file a complaint against the persons concerned, the police personnel were reluctant to register a case.

Instances of crime such as moral policing and illegal cattle trafficking are on the increase because of such police behaviour, he alleged.

The Vedike has filed a complaint against the intended khadga deeksha programme naming Hindu Mahasabha office-bearers Swami Pranavananda, Shravan Kumar Raikar, Rajesh Poojary, Umesh Moorthy, Lohith and Harish Acharya as the offenders.

Karnataka Missions Network president Walter J Maben, Choodamani Bangera, Catholic Sabha president Nigel Pereira, Aboobaker from Popular Front of India and PUCL member Kabir Ullal were present.

In an intriguing turn of events, authorities have levied a fine against an actress for breaching traffic regulations depicted within a television serial.

In the 14th episode of the popular serial ‘Seetha Raama’ a Kannada language drama series airing on Zee Kannada, a scene featuring two individuals riding a scooter caught the attention of viewers. While the rider adhered to safety protocols by wearing a helmet, the actress on the pillion did not.

Jayaprakash Yekkur, a vigilant resident of Mangaluru, took swift notice of this discrepancy and promptly lodged a complaint with the Mangaluru City Police Commissioner. Yekkur underscored the concern that such portrayals of traffic violations by actors and actresses could potentially convey misleading messages to viewers, particularly those who are impressionable. He urged authorities to take decisive legal action against the actress, the serial’s director, and the broadcasting channel.

In response to Yekkur’s complaint, the Commissioner of Police forwarded the matter to the Mangaluru Traffic Police station. Subsequently, notices were issued to the owner of the two-wheeler featured in the scene and the serial’s director. Upon investigation, it was revealed that the scene had been filmed in Nandini Layout, Bengaluru, and was referred to the Rajajinagar police station for further scrutiny.

On May 10, after thorough inquiries, the Rajajinagar police station imposed a fine of Rs 500 on both the actress and the owner of the two-wheeler. Furthermore, the production manager of the serial committed to adhering strictly to traffic regulations in future episodes.

Expressing his contentment with the resolution, Jayaprakash Yekkur commented that the prompt response from the police, coupled with the imposition of a fine, serves as a valuable lesson and contributes significantly to enhancing public awareness.

raghunandankamat.jpg

Naturals Ice Cream founder Raghunandan Kamath passed away following a brief illness. Born to a mango vendor in a village in Mangaluru, Kamath went on to establish Naturals, an ice cream parlour estimated to be worth Rs 400 crore today.

"Our thoughts on the sad demise of our patron and founder of Naturals Ice Cream, Late Raghunandan Kamath. Indeed a very sad and unfortunate day for us," the company said.

Mr Kamath grew up helping his father in selling mangoes in a village Karnataka's Mangaluru. This was when he learned the art of picking the ripe fruit, plucking it, sorting it, and preserving it.

As the legend goes, a young 14-year-old Kamath boarded a train from Mangaluru and came to Mumbai (then Bombay).

After working at his brother’s restaurant, Kamath had an idea — if ice creams have fruit flavours, why can’t they have real fruits. He decided to fill this void in the market. But unsure of whether customers would come, he began his business with serving pav-bhaji as the main dish and the ice cream as an add on.

His first ice cream parlour was launched in 1984 in Juhu, with the initial menu featuring around 12 flavours, each being a testament to the knowledge he acquired during the time he assisted his father in Mangaluru.

The demand kept growing and he opened five more outlets in 1994. Currently, it has over 165 outlets across 15 cities.

His story was captured expansively in ‘Intelligent Fanatics of India’, a book co-authored by Mumbai-based journalist Pooja Bhula.

Inspired by his mother's techniques, Kamath also developed innovative machines to streamline production and ensure consistency, notes the company website.
