The girl Smitha (name changed) hailing from Bangalore is the daughter of Siddappaji and Bhairavi. Soon after Smitha was born her parents had a quarrel which culminated in the murder of her mother. Her father who was shocked over this, had later committed suicide making Smitha an orphan.
It is learnt Shobha Shetty, daughter of Chadrolli Makkimane Ramanna Shetty and her husband who ran a hotel in Bangalore, who were issueless had adopted the girl. But they instead of taking care of her, used to make her do domestic chores like washing vessels, sweeping, mopping and washing clothes. The girl said they also made her starve.
Though the girl was admitted to a school for first standard, later she was relieved from school on the grounds that there was no one to do household works. In the meantime, the family moved to its native place after suffering losses in hotel business.
When Shobha Shetty begot children later on, the torture to Smitha increased. It is learnt she was even branded with hot ladle.
Unable to bear the torture of her foster parents the girl had escaped from the house on September 23, Monday morning and took refuge in another house.
The family which offered food to the little girl informed the matter to Udaykumar Tallur, State Organising Convenor of the Dalita Sangharsha Samithi.
He immediately intimated Udupi SP and with the help of The Concerned for Working Children and journalists visited the house and took the girl to the Kundapur police Station.
She is likely to be produced before the Udupi CWC which would decide the next course of action.
