Mangalore, Sep 27: A programme was jointly organised by Department of Tourism and Dakshina Kannada district administration in association with University College, Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) and Jungle Lodges and Resorts, Mangalore, at Ravindra Kala Bhavan here on Friday, to mark World Tourism Day 2013.

Speaking after inaugurating the programme, DK Deputy Commissioner N Prakash said that Dakshina Kannada was a district of diversities and one which fared well in terms of education, development, banking and other sectors. Union Minister for Tourism R V Deshpande has stressed on improving tourism in the coastal districts in the state. Being next to the coastline, there is a lot of scope for tourism in Dakshina Kannada, with various several opportunities waiting to be tapped. Local tourism must be promoted and the growth of tourism must be facilitated in the district, he said.

In his lecture on this year's theme'Tourism and water – Protecting our common future', Mangalore-based senior journalist Manohar Prasad said that water assisted the growth of tourism to a great extent, and water and tourism always went hand in hand. There should be concern and care towards preservation of water and its sources, as it is essential for our existence. A large majority of tourists are mesmerised by water, as it creates a joyous environment, he said, signifying the importance of water in the context of tourism.

Speaking about the history of Dakshina Kannada in the context of sea connectivity in the olden days, he said that sea fare was the only means for travellers to travel to far-off places. Foreigners sailed by sea in those days without any facilities such as electricity and means of instant communication, he said, adding that the district had a 130-km long coastline from Byndoor to Talapady.

Pointing at the lack of availability of travel maps in the district to guide tourists, he urged that the tourism sector and industry should not adopt a negative approach to protecting the common historic sights in the region.

Prizes were distributed to students from the district who ranked top in various competitions organised jointly by the organisers.

University College principal Ammal Kutty presided over the programme.

Assistant director of tourism U Jitendranath, Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project CEO Yathish Baikampady, Head of Department of Tourism (University College) Dr D P Angadi and Nirmala Kamath of city-based Nirmala Travels were present.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
