Mangalore, Oct 5: A comprehensively configured 3D Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) machine, which will benefit diagnosis and treatment planning in oral and maxillofacial radiology, with latest software applications will be inaugurated at Manipal College of Dental Sciences (MCDS), Mangalore on Monday.
Announcing this at a press conference here on Saturday, Dean of MCDS Dr Dilip G Naik said that the institution was the first dental college in India to have the advanced machine. The machine, which can be used to capture data to reconstruct three-dimensional images of the teeth and jaws in head and neck pathology and in the field of ENT, will be beneficial for people and doctors of different specialities of medicine and dentistry, he said.
Clinical applications of this system include dental implant planning, visualisation of dental abnormalities, evaluation of jaws and face, cleft palate assessment, endodontic diagnosis and diagnosis of maxillofacial trauma. An advantage of this machine is that radiation doses from dental CBCT exposure is about five times lower than the conventional CT exposure, he said.
The inauguration programme of the machine will be held at 8.30 a.m. at Medical Education Hall at Kasturba Medical College (Lighthouse Hill road), Mangalore on Monday. Health Minister U T Khader will be the chief guest on the occasion. Pro-Chancellor of Manipal University Dr H S Ballal and Pro Vice-Chancellor Dr V Surendra Shetty will be the guests of honour.
Associate deans Dr Kundabala M and Dr Mohan Baliga, and head of Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology Dr Junaid Ahmed were present at the press conference.
