Condemning former minister B Janardhan Poojary for this move, Committee founder Tonse Jayakrishna Shetty has said in a press meet on Saturday that this is not acceptable according to the religious norms and this move has earned wrath of lot of people within the community as well as outside.
"The temple does not belong to the Billava community alone. People from other communities too visit the temple. Hence it is the duty of the temple management to bring in programmes that are acceptable to all," he said adding that becoming a priest in Hinduism holds a lot of respect.

"Learned and those well-versed in the holy scripts, those well-versed in sanskrit and having hold over religious hymns are considered as 'priests'. Further women who are within the productive age cannot be appointed as priests due to their physical constrains," he said adding appointing widows as priests is not acceptable at all.
However, when asked if his logic is applicable even to widowers, Mr Shetty had no answer.
