Bantwal, Oct 11: Valuables of lakhs of rupees were stolen by the thieves from a residence of a beedi businessman at Nehrunagar, near Panemangalur toll gate, on Wednesday night.
The house belongs to P S Abdul Razak, owner of P S Beedi works. The thieves had gained entry into the house by breaking open the back door.
Surprisingly, they took away valuables, gold weighing 15 sovereigns and Rs 19.6 lakh in cash from the bedroom where Mr Razak and his wife were asleep. The theft came to light on Thursday morning and it is suspected that the thieves must have used some sedative on the sleeping family members. The thieves even fled on Mr Razak's bike.
Abdul Razak had kept the huge amount at home to pay the salary and purchase requirements for the business.
He had bought the house recently from a mutton stall owner.
Abdul Razak has announced an award of Rs one lac for those who can give credible information about the thieves.
Puttur DySP Mendonca, circle inspector Rajashekar Mistry, DCIB inspector Bashir Ahmed among others arrived at the spot and conducted inspection. A dog squad and fingerprint experts were pressed into action.
A case has been registered with Bantwal town police.
