
Mangalore, Oct 18: Tense moments were witnessed at the Syed Madani Darga Jum'a Masjid in Ullal on Friday, following a dispute between two quarrelsome factions of Sunni community over offering Jum'a prayers.
A few members in the agitating groups resorted to use lethal weapons like knives and rods. According to sources, at least eight people sustained injuries. The condition of two persons is said to be critical. They are undergoing treatment in two different private hospitals.
Sources said the dispute arose between Ullal Darga Committee and New Masjid Committee over the issue of offering'first Juma prayers' after Eid-ul-adha at Ullal Darga premises.
Earlier Ullal Darga Committee had sought permission from Waqf board to prevent new committee members from offering namaz.
More than 1,000 members belonging to new committee assembled to enter the premises leading altercation. According to sources, they had also sought permission from Khazi to offer namaz. But they couldn't get the permission as he was not available.
Police were also called in as apprehensions were rife that a commotion would break out over the issue.
Even though police tried to disperse the crowd, they did not budge. Police then resorted to lathi charge.
