Mangalore, Oct 19: A condolence meeting was held in honour of renowned Konkani poet and writer Leo John D'Souza, jointly organised by'Rakhno' Konkani weekly, Kavita Trust, Sandesha Foundation and Konkani Writers Forum at Bishop's House here on Friday.
A gathering of well-known Konkani writers and family of late Leo D'Souza paid tribute and homage to the poet known by the name'Liyaab' and'Kavyadas'.
In his introductory speech, editor of Rakhno Fr Francis Rodrigues said that the poet was not limited to a single language but was a multi-lingual poet.
Several have been guided by his books and works, and his contribution to Konkani literature and journalism is immense, he said, adding that his life was like a book, where he dedicated most of his life to the development of local languages.
Speaking on the occasion, close friend and former deputy mayor Judith Mascarenhas said that Leo D'Souza had been a multi-faceted personality and shone in his translations of Konkani works.
“Life of great people is a reminder to all of us that we should also strive to be the same,” she said, in conclusion.
Kannada writer Dr Na Da Shetty and Konkani writer C G S Thakode also spoke on the occasion. A few poems written by Liyaab were read out in his memory and honour.
