Udupi, Oct 22: An accidental fire gutted a truck carrying 300 LPG gas cylinders at Balebarighati on Hosangadi-Shimoga stretch on Monday. All most all the cylinders have been exploded. However, no casualties have been reported.
According to the sources in Amasebailu police station, the truck carrying nearly 300 cylinders from MRPL to Deekshith gas agency in Rannibennur was burst in the Ghat and the casualties were not reported as it was a dense forest without human habitation.
The truck driver Ajay who suspected something unusual on observing fumes inside the truck, stopped the lorry and checked. On observing, he could see fire spreading the truck. He immediately tried to bring the situation under control by using fire extinguisher, but his efforts went in vain. He threw 10 cylinders outside the truck and approached the Amasebailu police station.
The high-tension wire that passes through the stretch was neutralised and fire service personnel rushed to the spot. The movements of vehicles were blocked in one kilometre radius and were diverted via Nittur Ghat-Kollur.
The incident took place at around 4.30 and the fire was doused at around 7 pm. The traffic on the road has resumed late in the night after the green signal was issued by Fire Service officer. Amasebailu SI Naseer Hussein said that a few cylinders have not exploded. The MRPL officials are inspecting the cylinders.
Fire tenders from Tirthahalli and Sagar in Shimoga district had also joined the operations to control the fire. Debris has been cleared from the road.
A case has been registered at the Amasebail police station.
