Mangalore, Nov 12: 48 year-old Abdul Rahman from Thotabengre on the outskirts of the city succumbed to leptospirosis (rat fever) at a private hospital here on Monday.
He reported fever and was admitted at a private hospital three days ago.
He is survived by his wife and four children. He was a daily wage worker by profession.
Leptospirosis, called rat fever in common parlance, is endemic mostly in the rural areas of the district.
It is a bacterial zoonotic disease caused by spirochaetes of the genus Leptospira that affects humans and a wide range of animals, including mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles and is fatal.
If not detected and treated early, the disease has the potential to harm kidneys.
Its incidence peaks just before the start of monsoon and wanes after rains. The cases have spiked in the past two years: 216 cases and three deaths in 2011, and 197 cases and two deaths in 2012.
