Mangalore, Nov 13: Members of People's Union For Civil Liberties (PUCL) – Karnataka on Wednesday alleged that the president of a co-operative society in Panjimogaru had been working against the interest of the establishment and was trying to dislodge the Chief Executive Officer of the society, with the help of the Assistant Registrar of Co-operative Societies, Mangalore.
Speaking at a press conference here on Wednesday, PUCL state president P B D'Sa claimed that from the past few months, president of Perar Multi-purpose Co-operative Society Ltd, Panjimogaru Mrs Irene Cutinha was trying to remove the founder-member and CEO George Sunil Misquith from the post of the CEO.
“She wants a change in the CEO because he has not allowed her to misuse the funds of the bank. Our interest is in clarifying the issues to the members of the society so that they do not panic and start withdrawing their deposits. In the annual general body meeting that was scheduled to be held on September 22, seven of the total nine directors of the society were distributing pamphlets against the interest of the society and forcing members not to attend the meeting. The meeting was hence adjourned to September 29, when the seven directors obstructed the proceedings of the meeting again,” he said.
He said that a resolution was passed unanimously by the members of the general body present, expressing their'no confidence' on the present board and disqualifying the seven rebel directors who acted against the interest of the bank.
The Assistant Registrar of Co-operative Societies (ARCS), Mangalore A S Jayappa, instead of implementing the resolution passed by the general body and instead of superseding the entire board, has joined hands with the seven rebel directors and deliberately postponed the final decision, he said.
“It is the duty of the ARCS to approve the decision of the general body and authorise them to call for fresh elections to the board without and delay, and disqualify the present members of the board from contesting for the elections. The assistant registrar's behaviour of postponing a decision amounts to a corrupt practice,” he added.
PUCL also alleged that the president of the society Irene Cutinha had lodged false complaints at Bajpe police station with an intention to force the CEO to resign from his post, and that the Bajpe police were blackmailing and threatening the CEO to hand over the charge of the society to the president, perhaps under the influence of money.
The president has also served an illegal suspension order on the CEO without framing any charges, or demanding any explanation from him, said Mr D'Sa.
PUCL district president David D'Souza, member Augustine Rodrigues and directors of the society Rocky Pinto and Gracy Lobo were present.
