Mangalore, Oct 15: In a new development, Zubair Husain, the husband of Ayisha Banu alias Aasha alias Puttoli, who was arrested by Bihar police in connection with illegal money transactions, has been booked by Mangalore police under the Passport Act.
Assistant commissioner of police Ravikumar said that it had gone unnoticed when Zubair's passport application came for verification. Zubair had given a declaration that he was applying for a fresh passport as he didn't have one.
"After this case broke out, we checked again and found he was in the Middle East for six years and we called him again. This time, he admitted his earlier passport had been seized by the court in a dowry case. Since he chose to hide this fact, we booked a case against him under the Passport Act,'' he said.
The dowry case was filed against Zubair in 2001 by his first wife Zareena Banu ended in a compromise. The couple has three children.
Under the Passport Act, 1967, when an applicant holds a valid passport or suppresses / changes the personal particulars or where a criminal case is pending against him and this information is not disclosed in the application, he has to pay a penalty of Rs 5,000, if the applicant is literate or half if the person is illiterate. Also, a penalty of Rs 2,000 is imposed for literates and Rs 500 for illiterates is the applicant suppresses the fact that he had a passport and it has expired.
Under Section 12 of this Act, whoever contravenes the provisions by traveling without a valid passport, knowingly furnishes wrong information or attempts to alter entries made on the passport or travel documents, fails to produce her passport for inspection, knowingly uses a passport or travel document issued to another person or knowingly allows another person to use a passport or travel document issued to her shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term up to two years or with fine up to Rs 5,000 or with both.
