Mangalore, Nov 15: Ahead of BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi's public rally scheduled in the state capital of Bangalore on Sunday, several secular and progressive organisations came together and held a demonstration in front of the deputy commissioner's office here on Friday, against Modi's scheduled visit to Bangalore.

The district unit of Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike (KKSV), along with other like-minded organisations such as People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), Ahinda, Mangalore, Catholic Sabha, Mangalore, Popular Front of India (PFI), Dakshina Kannada, Mangalore Central Committee and UNIWEF, Mangalore on Friday participated in the demonstration.

Addressing the demonstrators gathered, KKSV district president Suresh Bhat Bakrabail said that the freedom of the country and its citizens was at peril from fascist forces who wanted to bring in a'fascist regime' in India. A foreign public relations agency was roped in to create a brand image for Narendra Modi, which is responsible for his false propaganda. From flex banners to NaMo brigades, there is no dearth of publicity on Modi in the country. However, a mass-murderer being projected as the prime minister is shameful,” he said, adding that the vast development in Gujarat state was a huge lie being circulated in the country.

Exposing the myth of development model in Gujarat as claimed by Modi's followers, he said that the country's highest developed state was Maharashtra and not Gujarat. Despite its tall claims of economic growth, the social and health indicators like Infant Mortality Rate, Maternal Mortality Rate and anaemia prevalence rates in Gujarat are dismal. The highest environment pollution in the country occurs in the state of Gujarat. While farmers, women and children are neglected in his “development model”, big corporate houses get heavily subsidised land, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, litterateur and thinker Dr Bhoomi Gowda said that it was a laughing matter that a person incapable of humaneness was being projected as the prime minister of the country. The voters and citizens of India are wise enough to decide for themselves who would be a suitable Prime Minister for the country. In a democracy, they are trying to build a country on the basis of Hindutva, behind which there are a lot of religions and beliefs. But, the forces behind Modi are projecting it in a different way by distorting the facts as per their wish. The same forces are trying to encourage people to hate people from other communities in the name of Hindutva. A state of peace and quietude will prevail in the country only if we choose a person who can bring the nation to that state,” he said.

Mr Bhat said that the Vedike will bring out a book detailing the “lies and inaccuracies” delivered by Modi during his rally speeches in his attempts to distort the truth.

PUCL state president P B D'Sa and district vice-president Ali Hassan also spoke on the occasion.

The demonstrators also held a mock funeral procession with the effigy of 'Fascist Modi'.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
