Sullia, Jul 6: Crops worth lakhs were destroyed by a herd of elephants at Ajjavara village in Sullia taluk of Dakshina Kannada district in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.
A total of six elephants, including a calf have destroyed dozens of coconut trees and areca nut trees belonging to former Gram Panchayat president Karunakara at Adpangaya area of Ajjavara.
Later it entered the land belonging to one Purushottama and destroyed banana trees. It also destroyed the pipeline.
Forest officials had a hard time controlling the crowd who had gathered at the venue.
Despite repeated requests, some youths were seen following the elephants, causing unrest among the herd.
With news of elephants damaging farms in the village, women and children of the village remained at the safety of their homes.
Some parents did not send their children to schools owing to a threat posed by the elephants.
