Mangaluru, Aug 7: One of the two youths, who were brutally attacked near Melkar town in Bantwal taluk by four assailants last night, succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital in the city on Friday.
The deceased has been identified as Nasir (27), a resident of Melkar. Another youth, identified as Mohammed Mustafa, is undergoing treatment in the same hospital.
Family sources said that the incident took place when Nasir was heading to Sajipa village on Thursday night in Mustafa’s auto rickshaw.
Near Melkar four men, who came on two motorbikes, requested the auto driver to stop his vehicle under the pretext of asking directions to Kukkaje.
When Mustafa was giving them directions, one among the four attacked Mustafa with a sharp weapon in an apparent murder bid. When Nasir started screaming, he too was attacked with the same weapon.
Local residents rushed both the injured youths to a hospital in Thumbay. Later they were shifted to Unity Hospital in Mangaluru.
However on Friday Nasir breathed his last without responding to any treatment. The body was shifted to AJ Hospital for post mortem before handing over to the family members.
Nasir is survived by his pregnant wife and a daughter. A case has been registered and investigations are on. No one has been arrested so far.
