Udupi, Jan 19: The Koosamma Shambhu Shetty Memorial Haji Abdullah Mother and Child Hospital should become a model for all other hospitals, said Union Health Minister J P Nadda.
Speaking at a function to dedicate the private run government hospital held at the District Offices Complex, here on Thursday, he said that it’s essential to provide free and quality healthcare to the poor.
Mr Nadda said that the National Health Policy 2017 aimed at providing healthcare to all people in a comprehensively integrated manner. He said that the policy laid emphasis on providing on all systems of medicine.
It stressed the importance of both government and private sectors in the field of healthcare. The Union government wanted to strengthen the healthcare sector. The policy was both patient-centric and quality-driven. It provided a policy framework for achieving universal health coverage and providing quality healthcare services to all at an affordable cost.
The government was giving importance to the health of mother and child. There has been a reduction in infant mortality. The interests of pregnant women had been taken into account. On the ninth of every month, gynaecologists working in the private sector check the health of pregnant women. This had given good results.
Under the Amrut Deen Dayal Scheme of the Union government, branded medicines and healthcare service was being made available at half the rates.
Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister for Fisheries, Youth Empowerment and Sports, said that the hospital had 200 beds and it would provide quality healthcare to mothers and children free.
Vishwesha Tirtha Swami of Pejawar Mutt graced the occasion. Dinakar Babu, president of Zilla Panchayat, Meenakshi Bannanje, president of Udupi City Municipal Council, Priyanka Mary Francis, Deputy Commissioner, Laxman Nimbargi, Superintendent of Police, were present.
