Mysuru/Mangaluru, Sept 20: The kabini reservoir authortieis have issued a flood alert, warning residents living downstream of the Kabini reservoir in Mysuru's HD Kote and asking them to move to safer locations.
The alert was issued on Sunday and it stated that the outflow of the reservoir will be increased to nearly 35,000 cusecs. This will be done in anticipation of an increase in inflow in the next 24 hours.
The increase is expected due to heavy rains in the upstream areas of the dam and the catchment area of Kabini, which includes the Wayanad region of Kerala. The reservoir reached maximum capacity and the water level was at 2,284 feet.
Meanwhile heavy rains lashing in kodagu district with authorities issued red alert bagamandala ,talacauvery and triveni sangama overflowing .the officials asked the people to not to venture come out in the hilly resions.
Only last month with heavy havoc with Brahamagiri landslide which claimed five lives including talacauvery priest.
Only three bodies have been recovered and had suspended the operation search for two more bodies for more than 15 days.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre has issued a forecast for widespread moderate to heavy rains in the coastal region of the state . The KSNDMC also predicted that very heavy to extremely heavy rains are likely to occur in isolated areas of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada districts.
In the mean time Heavy rains have been lashing various parts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts for the past 24 hours causing damage at several places.
The normal life affected due to heavy rains in the district. The Udupi city and Manipal are inundated and roads of the city are submerged in water.
The Udupi-Mangalore highway near Katapadi has been closed and people are forced to take the alternative road. Also, Padubidri road has been inundated and if the situation gets worse then it will be closed too.
Even the parking area of Udupi Sri Krishna Math also submerged in water. Areas on the banks of river Shambavi are flooded.
Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary has instructed to send NDRF force from Mangaluru to Udupi to deal with the situation.
