Kumki land ownership to ryots: Dist BJP welcomes government's decision

Mangalore, Jan 21: The district unit of the BJP has welcomed the decision of the state cabinet to give kumki lands belonging to the Revenue Department to farmers in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.
Addressing media persons at the district BJP office in Mangalore on Monday, Monappa Bhandary, MLC and Spokesperson, BJP, DK, said that around 4 lakh families in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts will benefit from this move.

“Kumki landowners now have rights over 100 yards of land next to their land. Earlier, these 100 yards of land would be owned by the government. Farmers were allowed to cultivate on these lands as a special right under the Karnataka Land Revenue Act '79(2). Farmers did not have the right to build houses and uses these lands for other purposes. The state government has made certain amendments in the state cabinet meeting allowing the farmer to completely own the lands,” Mr. Bhandary said.

Farmers are required to apply for ownership of Kumki lands within 6 months of Gazette notification, he said.

Padmanabha Kottary, District President, BJP, was also present at the press meet.

What is the latest update after this. No one has got kumki ownership. I think all the govts are fooling the people of DK & Udipi.
