Mangaluru: Gangster-turned-Hindutva leader Yekkur Baba dead

Mangaluru, Aug 14: Gangster-turned-Hindutva leader Shubhakar Shetty aka Yekkur Baba died at a private hospital in the city today. He was 61.

He was undergoing treatment at Mangala hospital in the city after testing positive for covid-19.

His mother was passed away a few days ago. After that he fell ill. He had sent his throat swab samples for testing and the results came positive. 

Baba was an accused in the murder of Prithvipal Rai but was acquitted in 2006 due to lack of evidence.

Chitradurga, Sep 16: Police assessed the value of ganja plants that had been seized at Vaderahalli in the taluk at Rs 4 crore.

Speaking to media here on Tuesday, Superintendent of Police G Radhika said the accused had grown 8,250 ganja plants on four acres of land that had been leased out.

Each plant measures three metres in height and the total quantum of ganja plants is 9,871 kg. Each plant has more than one kg leaves and such a quantum of ganja plants has been seized for the first time in the state.

She said the plants were almost ready for harvest and peddlers were about to receive them in two months. The accused had planned to dry the leaves and convert them into powder. There is a need to find out where they had planned to transport ganja plants and police required four days to cut them. Police team nabbed four persons, she added.

Bengaluru, Sept 28: Karnataka Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Suresh Kumar on Monday sought suggestions from Ministers and MLAs on reopening of schools which had remained closed due to the COVID pandemic.

The Minister stated in his letter that the schools shut in March had not been reopened on account of COVID-19. “The academic year which ideally should have commenced in June has not taken off properly till date. This prolonged gap has also paved way for other problems and hence I seek your suggestions on reopening of schools.”

He has appealed to the elected representatives to give their suggestions on when the schools should be reopened if there is any such possibility and which classes should be reopened first.

Kalaburagi, Sept 14: Kalaburagi police conducted a raid, arrested an accused and seized 223 kilograms of Ganja (cannabis) plants in Dharithanda of Kalaburagi district on Sunday, said police.

The value of the Ganja plants is about Rs 10.5 lakh, according to the police.

A case has been registered in Chincholi police station, Superintendent of Police, Kalaburagi said.
