Mangaluru, Sept 22: The Long-Term Care unit of Thumbay University Hospital, the largest private academic hospital in the region with 350 beds located at Thumbay Medicity, Al Jurf, Ajman, has added music to the services they offer residents, to reduce anxiety and depression among them and to enhance their healing process. As a beginning, music is now played for residents who have specifically asked for it, as they believe it soothes their minds and helps them adjust better to the life at the Long-Term Care facility.

A number of studies in recent times have suggested the use of music for the benefit of patients in long term care. Especially in people with conditions like Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, music has been found to reduce agitation and unhappiness.

The hospital is also making arrangements to enable patients play their favorite music instruments and create their own music, as part of the Long-Term Care unit’s efforts to help the patients pursue their creative interests and to keep them engaged in productive activities. Dr.Manvir Singh Walia, COO of Thumbay University Hospital says that by providing music of the patients’ liking, the hospital has introduced a unique way to support them. “This is in line with our holistic approach to care. We have seen that Long-Term Care residents are comforted by their preferred kind of music, helping them communicate more and better, and keeping them motivated on the path to recovery” he said.

In addition, the hospital has also launched a “happy hours” initiative for its long-term care patients, under which they’ll be taken to the hospital’s Therapeutic Garden every Friday, for an hour of relaxation and being close to nature. Patients will be served free juices and snacks during the happy hour.

A patient in the Long Term Care unit of Thumbay University Hospital, Mr. Lancelot Frank recently experienced a livemusic session at the hospital, conducted by House of Pianos, Dubai. A senior engineer and music enthusiast and a UAE resident for over 33 years, Lancelot is fast recuperating at Thumbay University Hospital.

Ms. Oxana Uncu, an award-winning Moldavian pianist and singer/songwriter and Mr. Abner D'Souza, musician and Product Marketing Manager at House of Pianos were part of the team that performed for Lancelot. Commenting on their cooperation with the hospital to make this possible, the Founder/CEO of House of Pianos, Mr. Shavkat Mamajonov said, “House of Pianos has been established to serve the community, be it artists, music lovers, beginners or those who need music as a therapy for treatment. It makes us proud that we can do our part to bring joy to the community with our work.”

The patient’s brother, Mr. Naveen Frank says that listening to music helps Lancelot cope better with his treatment and keeps him cheerful and optimistic. “He has always been fond of music and I’m sure it is giving him a renewed energy as he finds his way to recovery, helping him relax his mind and lift his mood,” he said. Naveen also performed old sentimental songs for his brother on the harmonica and guitar.

Thumbay Group has maintained Thumbay University Hospital   as a COVID-free hospital. The hospital has taken strict measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its patients, visitors and staff, including steps to limit the movement of people and maintain social distancing within its premises.

The 100-bed Long-Term Care facility at Thumbay University Hospital offers a variety of services which meet both the medical and non-medical needs of those who cannot take care of themselves. The Long-Term Care unit places equal emphasis on the quality-of-life and quality-of-care for its patients. It is designed for patients who need extended hospital care or nursing home care, and the facility’s convenient location allows patients to stay in a safe hospital environment and to continue interacting with family and friends. One of the most remarkable features of hospital’s inpatient facilities is the ‘Therapeutic Garden’; an innovative approach to rehabilitation aimed at providing holistic recovery to patients.

Bengaluru: In a shocking revelation, a former member of Hassan Zilla Panchayat (ZP) has accused incumbent JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna of raping her multiple times over three years and videographing the alleged crime.

A case was registered by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) based on the statement by the 44-year-old survivor on Wednesday, May 1.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the woman claimed that when she was a ZP member she used to visit the MLAs and MPs for various development works.

In one such instance in 2021, she met Prajwal seeking his help to get hostel seats for some female students at a local college. The woman, in her statement, said that since the MP was busy, she was asked to meet him the next day.

“The following day I visited the MP at his office and the MP's quarters in Hassan. The staff present there told me to wait on the first floor as there were many others in the hall. Prajwal spoke to some of the women waiting there, spoke with them and sent them off until I was the only one left,” the woman alleged.

As per the survivor, the MP then called her inside a room and she obliged.

“He held my hand, pulled me inside and locked the door. When I asked him why was he closing the door, he told me nothing would happen and made me sit on the bed. He said my husband should talk less and warned me of the consequences. He also said that because of my husband, his mother, Bhavani Revanna, missed the MLA ticket. He told me that if my husband wants to grow politically, I should listen to him [Prajwal],” the woman alleged.

Next, Prajwal allegedly told the woman to lie down on the bed and undress. When the woman refused and said that she would shout, Prajwal allegedly threatened her that he had a gun and warned of dire consequences for her and her husband.

The woman alleged that Prajwal took out his mobile phone and then raped her.

“He raped me and sexually assaulted me and recorded the act on his mobile phone,” the woman alleged. “He threatened to leak the video if I ever spoke about it and told me to be there whenever he wanted. After that, he used to video call me frequently, ask me to be naked during the call and raped me in multiple instances.”

The woman claimed that she was scared and did not make the incident public and chose to come forward after she learnt of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Karnataka government to probe the alleged Hassan sex scandal.

A case was registered under Sections 376(2)(n) (commits rape repeatedly on the same woman), 506 (criminal intimidation), 354A(1)(physical contact and advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures), 354B (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe) and 354C (voyeurism) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 66E (violation of privacy) of the Information Technology (IT) Act.

Prajwal is also accused in a sexual harassment case along with his father, Holenarasipur MLA HD Revanna, registered at the Holenarasipur police station in Hassan on April 28.

Bengaluru: Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda on Wednesday slammed Rahul Gandhi’s "wealth redistribution promise", stating that only someone with no practical knowledge can speak like that.

“He is dreaming of a revolution. By talking about wealth redistribution, Rahul Gandhi has insulted and humiliated two Congress Prime Ministers who brought market reforms and increased the wealth of the nation,” he added, recalling the contribution of P V Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh in economic liberalisation.

Accusing Gandhi of indirectly trying to say that what the two Congress Prime Ministers did was wrong, Gowda said, "He (Rahul Gandhi) has torn up their economic reforms like he had torn up an ordinance (which sought to overturn the rule that disqualifies convicted MPs and MLAs) issued by (the then) Manmohan Singh (government)."

The 90-year-old JD(S) supremo ridiculed the Congress manifesto claiming that only a party that is sure of never coming to power can make as many promises.

“The Congress has promised so many things in its manifesto. The only party that is very sure of never coming to power will promise so much,” Gowda said at a press conference here.

He said the Congress wants to turn this country 'upside down' and the promises made by it indicated that it wants to come to power 'at any cost'.

“Rahul Gandhi wants to do a wealth survey and distribute the wealth. Does he think he is a mass leader,” Deve Gowda said.

Picking up points from the Congress manifesto ‘Nyay Patra’, Gowda said Rahul Gandhi wants to 'give 30 lakh new central government jobs and run this country'.

“There are only 40 lakh sanctioned jobs. How can he create 30 lakh more jobs overnight? How much will he pay these people? Where will he employ them,” he asked.

“Only someone with no practical knowledge can speak like this. (P) Chidambaram was the manifesto committee chairman. Does he agree with Rahul Gandhi’s immature economic ideas,” Gowda said.
