Kasaragod, Feb 21: Kerala BJP President K Surendran on Sunday said that 'Metroman' E Sreedharan is suited to adorn any post in the state, including Kerala's Chief Minister's post.

Speaking to media persons ahead of the BJP's statewide rally 'Vijayayathra' here, the state BJP President said that Sreedharan joining BJP shows that people are fed up with the anti-development stand of both the United Democratic Front (UDF) and Left Democratic Front (LDF).

"People like Sreedharan joining BJP is an indication that they are not happy with the way UDF and LDF have run the state. He is qualified to adorn any post in the state including the Chief Minister's post. He can contest from any constituency," said state BJP President when asked about Sreedharan expressing his willingness to become Kerala CM, if BJP comes to power.

He said that in the coming days many more prominent figures who have winning probability would join NDA in Kerala.

The Vijayayathra led by Surendran will start today from Kasaragod, which will be inaugurated by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

A host of BJP national leaders will visit Kerala to partake in the rally in various districts which includes - Union Minister Gen VK Singh, former Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Minister Smriti Irani among others.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will be present at the concluding session of the rally on March 7 in Thiruvananthapuram.

Raichur, Feb 20: A 60-year-old man was burnt alive in a road accident when a car in which he was travailing caught fire after colliding with a roadside tree near Kalamal village of Raichur taluk on Saturday.

According to the police, the deceased was identified as Sadanandagowda Malipatil, native of Mallat village of Sirawal taluk of Raichur.

Police said that due to the impact of the accident, the central locking system of the car failed, so he could not come out to escape and was burnt alive along with the vehicle, they said.

Raichur Rural police registered a case.

Mangaluru, Feb 25: Hundreds of Beedi workers and contractors staged a protest in front of the Mini Vidhana Saudha against the proposed amendments to the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), here on Thursday.

Before staging the protest, a rally carried out from Hampankatta to the Mini Vidhana Saudha.

The protest was organised by various Beedi workers unions and contractors associations.

The protestors questioned why the government was making a move towards amending the Act without creating alternate employment opportunities for Beedi workers.

CITU District Secretary J Balakrishna Shetty, HMS leader Muhammad Rafi, AITUC Secretary Seetharam Berinja and others participated in the protest.

Bengaluru, Feb 11: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa directed the bankers to disburse loans under Prime Minister's Awas scheme and Prime Minister Swanidhi scheme.

Presiding over a meeting of Bankers at Vidhana Soudha on Prime Minister Awas Yojana and Prime Minister Swanidhi, he said that applications submitted under the Prime Minister Awas scheme will be forwarded to the respective districts' Lead Banks within 15 days, the District Lead Bank Manager should send them to various banks, and directed to expedite the sanction process.

He said The Prime Minister's Swanidhi Scheme is being implemented from July 2020 with the release of grants from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. Under the PM Swanidhi Scheme, street vendors will have a capital investment of Rs10,000 for regular payments and 7 per cent interest rate incentives to reward digital transactions.

He said that it has been instructed to issue loans for street vendors in the city and to distribute loans.
