Ahmadabad, Jul 8: The National Investigation Agency (NIA), which had asked the Special Public Prosecutor to go soft on saffron terrorists involved in Malegaon terror attack, has now filed its closure report in the 2008 Modasa bombing, in which Hindutva extremists were suspects.

It was during Ramadan fasting in 2008 when terrorists owing allegiance to a Hindutva outfit blasted an explosive-laden motorcycle in a busy market in Modasa of Gujarat on September 29 at 9.25 PM killing Zainuddin Gori, a 15-year-old boy and injuring 10 others. Incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi was then the chief minister of Gujarat.

The agency was looking for the two main accused Sandeep Dange and Ramji Kalsangra, who were suspected to have orchestrated the Modasa, Malegaon and Samjhauta blasts.

Both of them have been on run since 2008 and the NIA has also announced a cash reward of Rs. 10 lakh on information about them.

There was a striking similarity between Gujarat’s Modasa blast and the Malegaon bombing in Maharashtra, which took place a day before.

The explosive material was similar to the one used in Malegaon and the explosion took place in a Muslim colony named Sukka Bazaar, outside a mosque when special Ramadan prayers were being offered. In both cases, the explosives were concealed inside a motorcycle.

The NIA, which had taken over the case after two years of bureaucratic tussle between the UPA at the Centre and Narendra Modi government at the state of Gujarat, has now filed the closure in the special NIA court which accepted it.

In its closure report, the NIA informed the court that attempts were made to retrieve the complete chassis number of the engine of the motorcycle whose last three digits were not readable at all, sources said.

This is the first closure report filed in seven recent apparent saffron terror attack cases.

The 16-page final report named no suspects but only said that “the complainant is the victim of the blast and is fortunate enough to have survived”.

The closure report comes at a time when reports have emerged of a slew of cases, allegedly involving Hindu extremists, falling apart.

Last month, Rohini Salian, Special Public Prosecutor in the case related to the Malegaon 2008 blasts, had revealed that over the past one year, after Narendra Modi led government came to power at the centre, she has been under pressure from the NIA to go “soft” in the case. Meanwhile, the NIA has dropped Rohini Salian from its fresh list of Public Prosecutors.

The NIA has also returned the Sunil Joshi murder case back to Madhya Pradesh after the agency claimed that no case under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act was made. Joshi is a chargesheeted accused in the Samjhauta train blast case.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
