Bangalore, May 24: The proposal to set up a thermal power plant in Niddodi in Moodbidri taluk has been shelved said B. Ramanath Rai, Minister for Forests, Environment and Ecology and district in-charge of Dakshina Kannada.

He was speaking to presspersons after laying the foundation stone of the residential quarters for the staff of the Forest Department.

He said, “Yes, considering the opposition of the people to the project, we have stopped the thermal power project.”

The proposed project was of a 4,000 MW thermal power plant at Niddodi and it has faced resistance for three years now.

Mr. Rai said a new elephant corridor from Nagarahole to Belgaum would be built as the existing one was not effective in limiting elephants to their territory. However, he said, “The interests of the people living around it would be considered.”

He said the housing project for the staff of the Forest Department would be completed in 10 months.

According to Lakshminarayana, Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF), Bangalore, the staff quarters were being built for forest guards, foresters and support staff of Bangalore division. The building would consist of four floors each, with six flats on each floor. Mr. Lakshminarayana said, “This will be the first multi-storeyed residential building of the Forest Department.”

Varahi 2nd phase

Vinay Kumar Sorake, Minister for Urban Development, said in Udupi here on Friday that the second phase of the Varahi irrigation project in the district will begin shortly. Addressing presspersons, Mr. Sorake said the first phase of the project, in the final stages of completion, will provide 1,100 cusecs of water to 15,702 hectares of land in 33 villages of Kundapur taluk and 37 villages in Udupi taluk. A canal has already been completed and water will soon be released into it. The government has cleared dues of the workers and farmers of the Brahmavar Sugar Cooperative factory. It would call a meeting of farmers to discuss the future of the factory, he said.

The State government had allocated Rs. 232 crore in the budget for constructing permanent seawalls in the three coastal districts to prevent sea erosion. The works will begin shortly in the district.

Paschima Vahini project

A proposal to construct dams against the west-flowing rivers in the coastal districts, at a cost of Rs. 354 crore under the Paschima Vahini project had been submitted to the State government. This project will help recharge groundwater at many places in the district.

A proposal has also been submitted to the State government to supply drinking water from the Varahi to Udupi city, Brahmavar and Saligrama towns, and the villages, en-route.

This project would put an end to the water shortage problem in Udupi and other towns and villages en-route.

The government plans to give importance to developing Udupi as a major tourist destination. An amount of Rs 6.2 crore had been allocated to construct link roads to Kaup, Malpe, Padubidri and Someshwara beaches. A sum of Rs. 1 crore had been earmarked for the development of a heritage village in Manipal and Rs 2.26 crore had been sanctioned for building a tourist boat jetty in Malpe.

The government plans to set up the Karnataka State Remote Sensing Centre at the Deputy Commissioner's Office here.

This Centre would help in mapping and surveying lands in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada districts. Udupi would be the third city in the State to get such a centre.

An amount of Rs. 3 crore had been provided for the construction of an underground drainage system in Kollur, Mr. Sorake said.

Mangaluru: Chaos erupted at Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) after IndiGo flight 6E 5150, bound for Mumbai, was repeatedly delayed and ultimately cancelled, leaving around 100 passengers stranded overnight. The incident highlights the ongoing country-wide operational disruptions affecting the airline, largely due to the implementation of new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) norms for crew.

The flight was initially scheduled for 9:25 PM on Tuesday but was first postponed to 11:40 PM, then midnight, before being cancelled around 3:00 AM. Passengers expressed frustration over last-minute communication and the lack of clarity, with elderly and ailing travellers particularly affected. “Though the airline arranged food, there was no proper communication, leaving us confused,” said one family member.

An IndiGo executive at MIA cited the FDTL rules, designed to prevent pilot fatigue by limiting crew working hours, as the cause of the cancellation. While alternative arrangements, including hotel stays, were offered, about 100 passengers chose to remain at the airport, creating tension. A replacement flight was arranged but also faced delays due to the same constraints, finally departing for Mumbai around 1:45 PM on Wednesday. Passengers either flew, requested refunds, or postponed their travel.

The Mangaluru delay is part of a broader crisis for IndiGo. The airline has been forced to make “calibrated schedule adjustments”—a euphemism for widespread cancellations and delays—after stricter FDTL norms came into effect on November 1.

While an IndiGo spokesperson acknowledged unavoidable flight disruptions due to technology issues, operational requirements, and the updated crew rostering rules, the DGCA has intervened, summoning senior airline officials to explain the chaos and outline corrective measures.

The ripple effect has been felt across the country, with major hubs like Bengaluru and Mumbai reporting numerous cancellations. The Mangaluru incident underscores the systemic operational strain currently confronting India’s largest carrier, leaving passengers nationwide grappling with uncertainty and delays.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.
